Gary came to Liverpool's attention when impressing for Scotland in the European u17 championships. A deal was struck with Ross County and he joined Liverpool's Academy as a 1st year trainee for the 2007-08 season.
Signed as a left winger, he also spent a lot of time playing further back as there was no recognised left back in Hughie McAuley's squad.
Gary was one of the stars of the campaign, and along with skipper Steve Irwin he was rewarded by a call up to join Gary Ablett's reserve squad towards the end of the season. He made his reserve debut as a substitute in the 3-1 win over Wigan in April 2008.
