Daniel is a tall centre back who joined the reds from Sevilla in the summer of 2007. Initially he found it difficult to break into the reserve side due to the number of players ahead of him. Jack Hobbs and Mikel San Jose were the preferred pairing of Gary Ablett, and when either of those were unavailable Ronald Huth was usually the man to step in.
So Daniel's first games for the club were at u18 level, and to begin with he struggled for form and failed to impress. As the season progressed, Hobbs moved out on loan and San Jose was occasionally used in midfield, which allowed Ayala some playing time in the reserves, as Ablett's side swept all before them, winning both the Northern league title and the national play off final with a 3-0 win over Southern League winners Aston Villa at Anfield.
