ht access
I've asked this before (pretty sure real red helped me out with it), but I can't remember the answer.
How do I edit a ht access file, because I can't see the fucker, it's invisible. I'm trying to implement an amazon store thats embedded in the forum, and one of the things I need to do is add some text into the ht access.
I can see the text I need to add into it simply by dragging the file into a browser and reading it. But I can't open up my own ht access to make the changes.
So how do I do it?

Re: ht access
FTP it to your computer, edit it with notepad or the mac equiv and then save it, then reupload it back to the server via ftp. If you can't see it you might not have one so just create a blank file and call it .htaccess and then add the commands and upload it.

Re: ht access
Just remembered. The reason I can't see it is because its got a . in front of the name. It doesn't show up in file manager in cpanel or via my ftp client (cyberduck), so how do I make it visible?

Re: ht access
Done it now I think. I searched for the name in my ftp client, and it showed up. I downloaded it, and when I opened it there was nothing in the file, so I pasted what I needed to put in there, saved it without the '.' at the start, re-uploaded it and then renamed it to .htaccess
I assume that's what I'm supposed to have done and I haven't just fucked something up?

I downloaded this plug in thing to have an amazon store embedded in a forum page. Part of the instructions for installing it was to put some text into the htaccess.
I did everything I needed to do, but I'm getting an error message which I'm pretty sure is because I need to upgrade to php5 for it to work.
I just backed up the database as I haven't done it for a couple of weeks, but forgot to switch the forum off when I did it, which is why people may have gotten database errors.
And I've just noticed that the shop is fucked. Keep getting this message:
FATAL ERROR: register_globals is disabled in php.ini, please enable it!
So I'm gonna see if I can find that file and enable register_globals whatever the fuck that is.
The shop was working a couple of days ago, so I must have done something to break it but I've no idea what, as I haven't touched anything to do with the shop.

Re: ht access
If you paste the code of the php.ini file from the server in here, it will probably be something very straightforward
= TRUE or something like that

Re: ht access
I cant find it. I thik this error may be something to do with the changes I made to the .htaccess
Does that make sense to anyone?

Re: ht access
I think its something to do with the PHP upgrade, Skeet is better at this stuff than me though.
I know Vbulletin inside out, but not PHP and SQL

I haven't upgraded the php though. I downloaded the new version to my laptop, but I haven't installed it on the server. I haven't even been into the server control panel, let alone touched anything.
I just can't find that php.ini file anywhere.

Re: ht access
You can fix the register globals if you want to by going into WHM - https://72.232.233.42:2087/scripts/phpsettings. It's about halfway down.
But this way might be better - add this line to the .htaccess file:
Code:
php_flag register_globals off

Re: ht access
I deleted the original .htaccess file, which fucked up the shop. Skeet/Gayer/Leeson managed to sort it out for me in the end, and its working again now.

Re: ht access
I use a Mac and have Transmit as my FTP program (PM me if needed...). It has an option in the View menu to 'Show Invisible Files.'
I can see .htaccess file no problem, and just download and re-upload them any time I need to, like with any other file.
I remember this used to be a pain in the arse on a PC, but never a problem on the Mac.

I use transmit as well, and I didn't know it could do that. Cheers for the tip
