Virus?
Can anyone sort this problem out for me?
I keep getting a pop up saying...
'generic host process for WIN32 services has encountered problem and had to close.....etc.'
....then my connection fails and the only way I can get back online is to restart my PC then reconnect, if I just reconnect straight away it won't display any web pages.
Any help greatly appreciated.

Re: Virus?
Have you actually tried running a virus scan?

Re: Virus?
See this could be a virus, but it's perfectly plausible that something you've installed on your computer is making the process crash. Have you looked in your event viewer. It may give you more infor about the crash.
In case you don't know, access the event viewer by right clicking on "My Computer" and choosing "Manage".

Re: Virus?
Cheers mate. It says it was an application error, although I'm still none the wiser about what to do.
Here is the description
Faulting application svchost.exe, version5.1.2600.2180, faulting module netapi32.dll, version5.1.2600.2180, faulting address 0x0000a3c0.

Re: Virus?
If you double click on it in event viewer, there's more text. C + P that onto here.

Re: Virus?
Does it mention exactly what has caused it to crash? Go to Control Panel/Administration Tools/Event Viewer/System(probably, try the others if not) see if there is a mention of the faulting .dll or whatever in there.
There's a great method of debugging specific app crashes using an application called Windbg, but I'll save that for another time as I'm strapped for time at the mo.
I imagine it'll be summat network-related anyway, given the obvious symptoms. Maybe try resetting Winsock/Winsock LSPs. To do this, go to command prompt and issue the comment "netsh winsock reset" without the quotes, obviously.

How do I do this mate?
As you've probably realised by now, I'm a bit thick when it comes to computers!

That's what we needed. netapi32.dll is the file which failed. This is a fairly common problem with XP due to a patch being out of date or buggy.
Download details: Security Update for Windows XP (KB921883)
Download and install that patch and see if that solves it.

Re: Virus?
start menu hit the run button and type cmd in the little box.
You'll get a block DOS window in there you need to type netsh winsock reset and hit return

Thanks for the help everyone, you've all been repped.
I'm just about to leave for work now so I'll try your suggestions tomorrow.

Re: Virus?
Will it work? Will it nearly work? Will he be able to tell us if it worked?
Tune in tomorrow, for more. Or tonight if his shift's short enough.

Re: Virus?
I'm going nuts here, so similalry, some help would really be much appreciated. I've a virus/program on my pc called "pc privacy" - can't get rid of the fucker!
Have tried to use system restore, but as the the computer went to having really low resources, there are no prior restore points.
To make matters worse, the computer was put together for me in uni and I don't have the re-boot disks for XP.
And even worse I've spent all day using up my broadband allowance on shite spyware programmes that don't seem to work - Super anti Spyware for example.
Am I fucked, is the computer in need of putting down or is there a cure.
I have to say, I'm hardly the most technical of people - tend to use them a lot, but just for writing on.
Any help or advice, much appreciated.
