Stupid Wireless

The thing is, I reformatted my computer and had to install everything again. I installed my NETGEAR WGT624 v3 router and my NETGEAR dongle as normal, like I did the first time I installed it. My problem is that everything is hooked up, my internet on my modem is working, but I can't access the Internet. My wireless connectivity is Excellent, the status is connected but still I have problems.

Anybody got any ideas of what it might be hindering me?

Re: Stupid Wireless

haha I like the way Mick starts his post like we've all been discussing his problem all morning.

Michael, is the ADSL light lit on the router? Have you configured it properly with your email address etc for internet access? Who is your ISP?

Virgin Media. Everything is working fine, the Internet light is flashing etc. But it wont let me connect to the Internet. My Wireless is connected and everything and I've set my router up the same as I did last time; acquire IP address automatically etc.

Re: Stupid Wireless

Mick, quick and dirty first:

go to Start/Run and type:

ipconfig /renew

See if the above helps. If not, then check the information below to confirm that the router is connected ok to the internet. If this all works, then the problem is with your laptop connection to the router.

Troubleshooting the ISP Connection
If your router is unable to access the Internet, you should first determine whether the router is able
to obtain a WAN IP address from the ISP. Unless you have been assigned a static IP address, your
router must request an IP address from the ISP. You can determine whether the request was
successful using the web Configuration Manager.
To check the WAN IP address:
1. Launch your browser.
2. Access the Main Menu of the router’s configuration at http://192.168.1.1.
3. Under the Maintenance heading, select Router Status.
4. Check that an IP address is shown for the WAN Port
If 0.0.0.0 is shown, your router has not obtained an IP address from your ISP.
If your router is unable to obtain an IP address from the ISP, you may need to force your cable or
DSL modem to recognize your new router by performing the following procedure:
1. Turn off power to the cable or DSL modem.
2. Turn off power to your router.
3. Wait five minutes and reapply power to the cable or DSL modem.
4. When the modem’s LEDs indicate that it has reacquired sync with the ISP, reapply power to
your router.
If your router is still unable to obtain an IP address from the ISP, the problem may be one of the
following:
• Your ISP may require a login program.
Ask your ISP whether they require PPP over Ethernet (PPPoE) or some other type of login.
• If your ISP requires a login, you may have incorrectly set the login name and password.
• Your ISP may check for your PC's host name.
Assign the PC Host Name of your ISP account as the Account Name in the Basic Settings
menu.
• Your ISP only allows one Ethernet MAC address to connect to Internet, and may check for
your PC’s MAC address. In this case:
Inform your ISP that you have bought a new network device, and ask them to use the router’s
MAC address.

There isn't anything that says WAN port under Router status, Wiiksie. I'm connected to the Internet via my Wireless, but it keeps on working and failing as it pleases. The piece of shit. I done IPConfig in CMD and I am obtaining an IP Address from the modem from which I'm getting my Internet from. Plus the IPConfig/renew doesn't work, mate. Anywhere else where you think I should look if my WAN is obtaining an IP address?

Does the wireless connection keep working and failing Mick, or your access to internet addresses, i.e. web sites telling you 'site not found' or some other shit?

Re: Stupid Wireless

Can you still pick up your email?
Is MSN still working?
Can you ping?

Type ping 68.180.206.184 in cmd prompt you were in when you did the ipconfig.

It might just be virgin having a bad day on the day you decided to do your reinstallation which has happened to me before and after a few hours of taking everything to pieces it turned out nothing was actually wrong.

Cheers Gaz. Just did it and it is working fine. 4 bytes of data sent, 4 received, 0 lost. It might have just been that as I have installed my router three times including this time, and never had any trouble.

Thanks for the hand aswell lads. Have a green blob.
