Hmm, investigating the mafia , very interesting but possibly dangerous?
Good luck.
Godfather trilogy on dvd might be a little safer , and brilliant too.

Sci-fi, the military, history, politics (theory more than practical), philosophy, writing, films, organised crime (not just the mafia), the intelligence services, HBO dramas and good quality TV.

Talking absolute shite and ensuring that the female contingent of this world die knowing that they have had a piece of sexual-heaven on earth. The two are mutually exclusive.

Re: What you into...
Time-travel paradox-type stuff (Doctor Who, The Butterfly Effect, Red Dwarf etc) and conspiracy theories, usually involving the Knights Templar because of PC adventure games like Broken Sword and Gabriel Knight in the 90's. And Sherlock Holmes and Morse. I suppose I like a story that keeps me trying to second guess all the way through.

So are you interested in a very specific organised crime syndicate from Sicily? Or do you use the word Mafia as an umbrella term covering all organised crime?
Or do you subscribe to the theory that the word Mafia was a literary creation, and in fact "Cosa nostra" is the correct phrase?
I'm a beginner - so maybe you could give me a bit of a lesson?
I am personally very interested in Communism, Eastern Europe, the break up of Yugoslavia and 'politics' in that area.

American LCN is the 'american-italian mafia' the Naples gangs (where Tony Soprano's crew originate) are the Camorra and are notoriously violent and less sophisticated than the Sicilian Cosa Nostra, and are more likely to machine gun someone from a scooter rather than bribe a judge.
They're three distinct organisations though.
