Liverpool restaurants rated/slated
What is everyone's opinions on the standard of eateries in Liverpool at the moment?. They didn't get a great review in some national guide that was printed the other week. Me and the missus went to Mayur in Duke Street last night, nice interior, service etc but the food was very expensive for what it was. What is everyone's favourite/least favourite place to eat out in Liverpool?
The past year or so I've been to and liked:
Negresco (Lark Lane)
Meet (Argentinian)
Meet (Brazilian)
Il Forno
Algarve (Portuguese)
Cafe Sports England
Casa Italia
La Vina
The Living Room
Gate of India in Waterloo - stays open forever
Didn't like:
Baccos
The Italian place at the top of Stanley Street (not Casa Italia)
The Tavern - full of scalls
Blue Bar - useless service
Savina (Mexican) - about 2 things on the menu

Re: Liverpool restaurants rated/slated
Its a shame about the Tavern, it used to be fine in there, the kind of place you could go out to and there would be no bother, take mates or family...it appears that its nobhead central now.
I guess it depends on who you are out with and what the occasion is.
When me and Firemarshall go out for a curry after a few pints we usually end up in what was the Empire of India on Stanley St...I think its the Shah Balti House now. Thats always OK, the staff are friendly, the prices are acceptable and the scran isn't bad.
The places we always avoid are the all image and no substance types like The Olive Press....4 quid a pint, the food is shit, the service shit and the prices are a joke.
The Mexican gaff on Hope Street used to be OK for a good scran.

Agree about the Olive Press - very bland, so bland in fact that I can't even be bothered hating it or liking it. I will give that El Macho a try though

Re: Liverpool restaurants rated/slated
Tavern - nice food, occasional dickheads
Ask - food is 'alright' but the plae often sounds like a canteen, nice layout inside.
Villa Romana - food is nice and it's lovely inside, few kids running around last time I went though which pissed me off.
Il Forno - nice food, very small inside but a nice atmosphere and top staff when i went.
Pan Am - dear as fuck, food was nice but a few posers.
Have been in a couple of others I can't remember the names of, there's nowhere I'd feel 100% certain of having a top night though, I go to restaraunts in Liverpool with hope there'll be no cunts there rather than expectation.

Re: Liverpool restaurants rated/slated
I liked The Olive Press the one time I've been there.
The Argentinian Meet is probably the worst restaurant I've eaten in in some time.
Il Forno - ok but nothing special
Cafe Sports England - ok for a cheap burger with a pint
Casa Italia - awful
La Vina - better than La Tasca but not as good as the old Don Pepes
The restaurant in Hope Street Hotel is quality if very expensive.
Piccolinos is the best Italian restaurant in town.
Sapporo Teppanyaki is great for a special occaision.

some cracking out of town restaurants have openind up in the last couple of years, especially from the korova group
casa del cocodrilo and fargo in woolton are good so is negressco on lark lane.
The Gallery on allerton road is good too.
In town i like sapporo, la vina, piccolino, the lower place and 60 hope street is a favourite.

El Macho rules been a rew times and its my favourite Mexican in town. Would recommend Monroes on the corner of Slater St and Duke St - its pub grub with a bit of class - nice as a small boozer too.

Re: Liverpool restaurants rated/slated
Munro's on Duke is quality. Bistro Jacques on Hardman St is delicious and not too expensive. Cafe Sports England has this really good pizza that I like(the Carnivore) but doesn't have beer on tap in the Restaurant.
To be honest... I don't eat out very much as I cook often.
I ate at Mayur with a mate and she and I both liked it...It's indian place right next to Il Forno.

Re: Liverpool restaurants rated/slated
Owens at the Fiveways was a really nice relaxed place . The Ambassador in Gateacre was also nice when I went, as was the Indian opposite Allerton Library. In town, I never really bothered. 68 Hope Street was OK as were both the Russian and Japanese restaurant's whose names escape me. The same lad who owned Owens also owns the Manor over the water, and that is really nice. I think the standard in Liverpool is as good as anywhere. Perhaps there may not be as much quantity as other places but in terms of quality, I'd put the best ones up against pretty much anywhere else.

Re: Liverpool restaurants rated/slated
Simply Heathcotes and The Olive Press are both very child-friendly with good food, service and value. Ziba, 60 Hope Street and The London Carriage Works are all good for the top end. Casa Italia is a great traditional trattoria and also very child-friendly and Il Forno is a nice "posh" Italian.
I've been to Meet Argentina once and it was fucking shit. A steak house that couldn't cook steak and the service was truly abysmal. It struck me as one of those places where people go for a night out rather a meal, if you know what I mean. Certainly the food did not seem to be the number one priority of either the staff or many of the customers.

When was this Paul ?
We went about a year ago and I thought the steak was fantastic.Mrs Grazy had the Chorizo stew which was indeed fabulous.Maybe it has changed or got complacent .
