Henry Cooper...
Just watching his fight with Ali on ESPN classics. Just knocked Ali on his ass. What a leg. Now there's a true English sportsman.

Re: Henry Cooper...
I liked old Henry, very affable chap. A bit overrated just because he put Ali down, not a great by any means but he would probably have taken Audley down.

Re: Henry Cooper...
Ali was beat. The seconds cut Ali's gloves and and somebody had to go to the dressing rooms to get a new pair. This gave his corner over two minutes to bring him round. Only for that Cooper would have won.

The whole time thing is a myth that has gone down in legend and folklore....didn't happen.
There was a tear in Ali's glove, true enough, but he got little more than the usual minute between rounds. Watch the footage and see for yourselves....it was a matter of a few seconds. People speak like Ali had minutes longer than normal and was sitting on his stool for ages.
Ali had a sound chin and excellent recuperative powers, its Henry's claim to fame, but the whole thing is a legend that has been exaggerated over a period of time.

Re: Henry Cooper...
boxing = ace.
only problem is too many lads go to boxing to get hard. you will never find a hard boxer and if you do, thy're not hard because they can box, they will just be hard anyway. i'd give odds that the majority of boxers would crumble in a carpark or pub toilet.

because boxing is not fighting. its a game where you score points by making contact with his head/torso. knocking them out is a way to win which is obviously seen as better than winning on points in the same way scoring a goal from 45 yards is seen as better than dirks bobbler off the knees.

Worst post ever, I know a good few boxers and believe me they are all "hard", if you are lucky enough to be still conscious after a punch from someone who knows how to box, the only thing you will be doing is running.

So you havent any actual experience?
I'll tell you something, I'm not hard, I don't pretend to be, but I boxed between the ages of 13-16, and the difference between thinking you can punch, and knowing you can punch is unmeasurable.

Re: Henry Cooper...
boxing isn't about being hard and gettin big digs in unless your throwing haymakers. look at barry mcguiness, he's only a few inches and lb's off being a jockey.
surely if it was all about knocking the other lad out you would throw mainly hooks and your jab would be straight into the face rather than the pathetic back of the fist twisted arm bollocks the majority of trainers teach.

boxing is 100% different to brawling. for a start your fists are half the size.
and on the experience thing, i have kick boxed since i was 12 twice a week and done ju jitsu since i was 8. ju jitsu is more like actual fighting than boxing. when it goes off in the pub you don't throw a guard up and keep him at distance with your jab, it's about getting it over as quick as. i learn far more from punching in ju jitsu than i do from kick boxing, for a start you 'throw' a punch in boxing and 'strike' in ju jitsu. believe me a dig when your in stance and have your weight behind it is far more brutal than chinning someone.
