Tech help. Broadband speed test
What is the best way of testing a broadband connection? It is for someone living in the manchester area.

This is quite an accurate one Jim, if its a BT dsl line:
http://speedtester.bt.com/
Needs the Java runtimes though, which it will install automatically if they aren't present.

Re: Tech help. Broadband speed test
speed testers are generally shite. best way of really testing your speed is by downloading something big from a major site like microsoft and using something like DU Meter which will tell you how fast you're downloading it at.

Re: Tech help. Broadband speed test
Send them an email and then count the number of seconds it takes for them to recieve said email. Multiply this figure by 56 and there is your answer in kB.

No it's not, because you risk their upload being fucked by a lot of requests.
Use a speed tester from someone close by. No use testing download speeds from fucking New Zealand.

That's the one. I find that to be the most reliable and also gives you your expected line speed in comparison to actual.
If there is a big fuck-off difference between expected and actual, with that being an official BT test, it is quite a big stick to beat your ISP around the head with. Well, it is with the ones who don't employ vegetables for support staff, that is.
