Speed cameras
I live in a fascist state. I was doing 65-odd - but slowing down all the same - in a 50 zone. 90 euros of a fine and 2 points off my 7 week old licence. Damn cops.
Think I'll be sitting the test again meself...
Save a fortune on petrol though.

Re: Speed cameras
Speed cameras are predominantly a way to raise revenue. Those in authority would maintain it is about safety, but it isn't. It is clearly an underhand tax, plus a way for the police to statistically record 'progress' in their ongoing fight against crime(!)

True... if it wasn't about raising revenue they'd give bans rather than fines.

That is one thing I can't stand. He should have been banned for a year and had to retake his test. Its easy to over step the mark with speeding (we've all done it), particulary when a new driver, but a new driver (in fact any driver) drink driving is fucking obscene.

Re: Speed cameras
Seem to be loads of police out these days with their vans parked up at the side of the road checking for insurance and so on. That's probably more of a PR exercise than anything.
If speed cameras were there for safety they'd have more of them outside schools and other places of high-risk.

With the points sytem ultimately they do. My Brother has been very close to a ban a few times, all through speeding. It taught him eventually.
I don't see as a revenue raising issue and neither with parking enforcement. I've never had a point, fine or a parking ticket in six years of driving. (yeah I've done speeding and illegal parking, but never been caught).
If I had been caught on either it would be solely my fault. No one else. So I couldn't and wouldn't moan. In my view, both are avoidable, you choose to take the risk, so deal with it if you get caught.

Re: Speed cameras
I got an 80euro fine and 2 points for breaking the 120kmph speed limit on a motorway recently.
Must say I've become a safer driver, certainly in terms of speed, after the incident.
That said, I'd be fuming if I was done for doing 54 in a 50kmph zone.

Got a ticket for stopping on a box junction the other day £60! - the traffic move so slowly in London you've often got no choice but to stop. They know that - the bastards.

Re: Speed cameras
There was that interesting fact on TG a couple of years back - the government collect more in income tax from Simon Cowell than they do from speed cameras.

Re: Speed cameras
I got flashed last night going through a red light, which was on amber when I went through. I had someone up my arse so I couldn't have braked without him going into me. I was about 3/4 of the way over before it turned red.
Have I got any chance of contesting it? I'm not too bothered about the fine, but I don't want the points.

Ooh - listen to Miss Moneybags here....
Could it be the car up your arse was the one flashed? Or had he stopped?
The only person I know who got done on one of those got done for going through on amber. Or Red-Amber to be accurate, he'd actually anticipated the lights.
I expect they'll have a calculation of some kind on that set of lights to tell them if you could have stopped any sooner, and safely, based on the speed limit and the timings of the amber light.

Re: Speed cameras
I intend to 'deal with it'. In fact I have already done so, by taking it as a blessing in disguise. I have no excuse. Take the punishment and learn from it.
Just stupid that there are many people out there who see their car as a toy and don't get done. It's a numbers game over here and the real dangers aren't being targeted.
Ho-hum.
