Learning to drive.

Got driving lessons for my birthday i managed to get away with it for 30yrs but now i'm under pressure to do it.
Girlfriend brought me out today and i was terrible, i couldn't get my head around the clutch and accelerating thing, i was in a car park and noone was around but then another car came along and i had to get out of there so i only got around 15minutes but i have a lesson on Wednesday and i'm shitting it. I really hope i'm not one of those who'll never pick it up, i think Peter Kay got something like 200 driving lessons and still can't drive.

Good luck with the lesson. I have my first lesson on Tuesday, but I am much younger than you.

I'm not allowed outside Ireland with my L plates.

Hot air balloon race around the world?

Re: Learning to drive.

Getting your head around the clutch takes time. Just think of it as a switch which joins the engine to the wheels. When it's pushed down the engine isn't connected to the wheels, when it's up, the engine is connected to the wheels.

The easiest thing to do to get the hang of it is to get back in the car park and get the hang of finding the bite point, ie: where you have to let the pedal up to for it to connect the engine to the wheels.

That was the part that was doing my head in, i had a very big hangover which probably didn't help matters either.

30 or 40 lessons? Does that not cost a pile of money?

Re: Learning to drive.

My step dad and brother took something like 14 attempts between them to pass - no shit, so i got a bulk amount at discount cost as he assumed that i'd be just as bad - and he was right.. He as also a right perve and i dreaded that hour alone with him in the car - although with hindsight i could be driving now!!

Re: Learning to drive.

I had 10 lessons and passed 5 months after my 17th. i drove my Dad to work every morning after I'd had about 5 lessons and that was the best thing to do.

Re: Learning to drive.

I have my first lesson tomorrow, and like RiS, I plan to drive my brothers to school after 6 or 7 lessons. It will build up a bit of confidence.

Re: Learning to drive.

I took four goes to pass my test. I took the first three on fridays and failed them all on stupid little things, like really niggly things that the examiner probably would have ignored on another day. I got no more than four minors on each one. One of my mates said that he'd heard that examiners had weekly quotas of fails to meet and I assumed that he was saying that to make me feel better, but I took my next text with one lesson in between, on a monday morning and pissed it with 1 minor.

Re: Learning to drive.

I failed 3 times when I was about 17, then gave up for a while. Just couldn't afford the lessons. It wasn't until I was in my mid-twenties that I finally passed. Nerves got the better of me on the first three fails, but by the time I did my fourth test I'd done a lot of driving with L plates on with the Mrs sat next to me.

It made a huge change to my life really, being able to drive all of a sudden.

I had been behind the wheel of a car 17 times when I passed my test first time. I am ace.

I drove 6 miles to school a few times before I had even had a lesson. That was a bit daft but a fuckoff rush!
