Someone asked me last week what the difference were between them and i said i would find out for them, however in typical style i have left it to the last minute and can't find nowt on net,(probably not looking hard enough).
Does anyone know what the differences are?
cheers.

Wheat never formed a formidable double act with Darryl Hall.

Phylogenetically they belong to the same Family ( Poaceae). After that it gets technical and I can't be bothered deliving into it. Essentially they are both grasses, wheat is used mainly for flour/pasta/cooking while oats are predominately a livestock feed. However they do get used in cooking in things like biscuits and porridge

Re: oats and wheat.
"There are approximately 4,000 hybrids, mostly infertile, identified and referenced in the grass hybrids database ( http://128.32.88.35/grassweb), and there are certainly many more hybrids known, but not yet reported."
It's fascinating stuff.

Yes you can. There are plenty of products on supermarket shelves that contain shredded oat.

C. sativa is fascinating. Wheat is boring, albeit essential.

I'll say yes but it does look like a Shredded Wheat packet which has been subjected to a bit of photoshopping.Maybe oats and wheat are the same thing after all.
