"Virtual Memory Too Low" warning
Apart from obviously needing to reboot, what does this message that my PC has just given me actually mean? Apparently Windows is going to do something about this on its own, but should it and is it a problem? Techy nerds please apply your super powers to my ICT conundrum. Many thanks in anticipation of your generous support of a luddite.

Is your hard drive nearly full or is there less hard drive space than is set for your virtual memory? If not change the settings by going to control panel then system, then advanced, then perfomance and then virtual memory, increase it and the problem will go away.

Re: "Virtual Memory Too Low" warning
Go to My computer right click properties and go to advanced /performance options and it will let you set it from there.

Re: "Virtual Memory Too Low" warning
What do these replies actually mean? What is virtual memory and why do I need more of it? How do I know if my hard drive is full? What do I do to clear it?
Note to techy nerds: give me instructions as if you were talking to a three year old.

I just have, click start, click control panel, click system, click advanced, click performance, click advanced again and then click change next to virutal memory, you will see a box, increase the virtual memory until the problem stops, if it keeps coming back after you've increased it, increase it some more, maybe by a 100 MB each time. Windows can use some of your hard drive as virtual memory to aid performance. If you don't have enough room left on your hard drive, delete some files.

It means your hard drive is nearly full with all the hard core porno links you've inadvertently picked up on this site.

Re: "Virtual Memory Too Low" warning
Virtual memory is a small amount of memory taken from the hard drive rather than the 'memory sticks' you get, or in the case of the 3 year old explanation, 'memory stickle bricks'. You set it to one tenth of the size of the drive or some other ratio. If you hard drive is full of Barry Horne then you need to delete some as there is none left for memory.
In short, delete some shit.

Re: "Virtual Memory Too Low" warning
I've got loads of music on it and have now deleted some. I'm also doing things like "Defragmentizing the disk" and "Deleting superfluous files". Is this a good thing to do or will my laptop explode?

Yes, I mean no, try not to press the 'self destruct' button or water your laptop though.

Get cc cleaner if you don't have it and run it once or twice a week to clean out temp files, cookies etc.
http://www.ccleaner.com/
Also a good idea if you're on XP to manually stop some of the superfluous processes it has running which degrade performance

Being told to reboot and doing it off your own back are two entirely different actions. Beleive me, I work in IT!
