British TV at the moment
...Is the worst i can remember it.
Not just talking about BB and Love Island and all the usual gripes, but even the other day i caught a bit of Casualty. I can remember when it first aired it was well written and quite gritty and realistic, now its just contrived childish shite!
It doesn't help that the USA is producing some of the finest TV ever made right now, it really does put us to shame in all departments.

Re: British TV at the moment
It is pretty poor. Saxondale is on tonight though which I have really got into.
But generally speaking, there isn't much on tv that is worth watching. UKTV sometimes show repeats of comedies, but when it comes to good tv being repeats you know things are pretty bad! But has tv ever been good?
I could live without tv, especially throughout the summer when there's no footy on. There aren't many things I watch religiously or look forward to.

"Worst week of my life" was a good series on a few months back. Apart from that, yeah UK tv sucks.

GBH is being repeated though. In top3 best UK dramas ever, I would've thought. Shabba!

Unfortunately channel 4 does the best UK shows at the moment imo. And due to it being big brother season their prime slots are filled up with that. Hopefully the beeb will come up with something as good as Life on Mars in the near future to challenge c4 mantel. ITV is just a waste of time I can’t remember the last time I really watched something other than footie on that channel except for that Yankee demon hunter program that was on late.

Re: British TV at the moment
Whatever happened to CH4? Their remit was for challenging and innovative programming but now they're just as obsessed with celebrity and people shows as the rest. Apparently ITV are cutting their drama output even more.

Re: British TV at the moment
British TV is made for teenagers and women, that's all i can put it down to.
There are probably allot of producers and writers out there who are doing their nut but can't get a show commisioned.
Where the Heart is is a good example, its basically actors from every Soap Opera and the Bill, all rammed into one show, its a cynical attempt to get viewing figures without actually having to tell a story or build characters.

Re: British TV at the moment
C4 were still doing some decent comedies recently like Peep Show and Book Club or whatever it was called.
The trouble with original dramas is they are too expensive to make, much easier to pay one of Stu Monty's chimps to come up with the latest reality TV sensation. No need to pay a team of writers and actors, just let members of the pubilc make tits of themselves and everyone's happy!

Citing SSN as one of the last bastions of TV quality did make me smile ! (We all watch it but it is shite isn't it).
Always remember a sketch on A Bit of Fry and Laurie years ago - Hugh Laurie was sitting in a posh restaurant - all fine china, crisp linen and silver cutlery. Waiter comes over and takes his silver cutlery away saying - ooh you don’t want that to eat your meal with - what you need is a wider choice of cutlery. Quality fine silver is so outdated – you need choice. Proceeds to then tip a bin bag full of plastic crappy cutlery over the table and says there you go - that’s choice for you.
That's our telly that is. Plenty of choice but all crap.

Re: British TV at the moment
Shameless is still a great show when on form. But I do find myself pretty much watching wall to wall Seinfeld, Curb Your Enthusiasm, Frasier, Trailer Park Boys and the Simpsons, so I do agree that our telly currently pales next to American stuff. It's cyclical though, a few years ago we had Partridge, Spaced, Phoenix Nights, Black Books etc, we're just in a bit of a temporary lull.

Good points but the serious drama is pretty sadly lacking. And it all tends to use re-hashed concepts too. I was in WH Smiths looking at the DVD's and there was one called 55 degrees north, a BBC show about a black copper in Newcastle, it said on the front:
'Your new, your a cop, and your black!'
I pissed myself, 'You black!' is this an 'original spin' on the cop show format these days? That might have actually been interesting in the 70's!
I actually quite likes Spooks even though it wasn't actually blazing a trail, watching The Shield and then turning on Casualty isn't advisable if you doubt the quality of Uk television production values, let me tell you.
