Majorca

I am heading to Majorca next week for 2 weeks, and was wondering if anyone could give me advice on places to see and things to do. Meeting up with my family in Dublin, and they flying over for a family holiday. Last time I was near that area was Ibiza back in '86. Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

Re: Majorca

I'm sure Sangria can do a much better job of this than me, but as I love the place, I'll hit you with a few suggestions - although if you're after mayhem and burning the candle at both ends, I'll be no help whatsoever. I did all my nutty holidays in Ibiza; Majorca is where I've gone for several years for a family holiday.

Palma is a great city and a little reminiscent of Barcelona as Gaudi's hand can be seen around the place. The Cathedral and the old town behind are worth a look as is the Museum of Contemporary Spanish Art that has works by Miro, Dali and Picasso. However, all of that is only a distraction from the real appeal of any Spanish city, which is the eating and drinking and watching the world go by.

Go into any of the great little tapas bars and spend an hour or three chatting, eating and drinking and you'll undoubtedly get into conversation with someone Spanish, and if you make an effort to speak in their language, you'll be very popular - no matter how shite your skills. If you've got young kids, it'll happen instantly. Some waiter or waitress will happily volunteer to entertain the kids while you eat and you'll soon understand how family-orientated Spain is.

As for the rest of the island, I strongly urge you to just hire a car and explore. Majorca has a strong artistic/Bohemian (for want of a better word) culture and is full of little villages with galleries, shops and restaurants where it's a pleasure to just sit, chat and relax.

The area I know best is the South East which has a number of lovely fishing villages and secluded little beaches, but the whole place is great - even Inca, the quite industrial town near the centre of the island. Going there on market day is a real experience.

Basically, if you want to relax and experience the very best of Spanish culture, you're going to an incredible place. If you want to get bladdered, I've no doubt it can cater for that (where can't, after all?), but it's not what the island is all about at all.

Thanks Paul, I don't drink alcohol, so definitely not into the bar/club scene. Meeting up with the family and just looking to enjoy the Island.

Thanks for the great tips!
