Goals from Zak Whitbread and Ramon Calliste gave the reds reserves a comfortable win over an experienced Wigan side at Robin Park. Whitbread headed in an inviting right wing free kick from Mannix after half an hour, and Calliste wrapped up the win with a good finish with 16 minutes remaining. Jerzy Dudek made his return after an elbow injury, and was in excellent form.
Wigan included the likes of David Connolly, Matt Jackson, Emerson Thome and Alan Mahon, but were second best to a hungry young Liverpool side in which Godwin Antwi and David Raven excelled at the back. Antwi was making his first appearance for the reds in his favoured centre back role, and did very well alongside Danny O'Donnell.
Skipper Raven was outstanding in both defence and attack, and went close to scoring in the second half when he forced the Wigan keeper into a good save after exchanging passes with Calliste. Dudek had nothing to do in the first half, but produced several good saves in the second period, including one stunning stop from a curling shot by Teale.
