Part 2 - Palace 1 Liverpool 6
PALACE HAMMERED AT SELHURST (1994/95) | |
| Season - 1994/95
Opposition - Crystal Palace
Scorers - Jan Molby (pen), Steve McManaman (2), Ian Rush (2), Robbie Fowler
Result - 6-1
Venue - Selhurst Park |
When the reds made the trip to Crystal Palace on the opening day of the 1994/95 season, hopes were not exactly high amongst the club's followers. The side's performances at the end of the previous season had been woeful, and pre-season results had been for the most part disappointing too.
A trip to Palace on paper looked potentially tricky, but a Jan Molby inspired reds ran riot at Selhurst Park, demolishing the Londoners by six goals to one.
With Steve McManaman given a floating role, Liverpool swarmed all over Palace right from the first whistle. Molby opened the scoring with a 12th minute penalty, before McManaman doubled the lead two minutes later. Robbie Fowler made it three when he took advantage of a mistake by Darren Pitcher, only for Chris Armstrong to pull one back for the home side.
Any hope Palace had of an unlikely comeback were dashed by an Ian Rush header, and the win was wrapped up in emphatic style as Rush and McManaman claimed their second goals of the afternoon to get Liverpool off to a flying start in Evans' first full season in charge.
