Carra tribute to departed heroes
Jun 21 2005
Jamie Carragher has paid tribute to departed Champions League winners Vladimir Smicer and Igor Biscan.
Speaking during an interview for TLW's Champions League Summer Special, Carragher praised the role played by Biscan during the Champions League campaign, and spoke of his delight at seeing Smicer's Liverpool career end on such a glorious high.
"Everyone was delighted for Vladi" said Carragher. "He was always laughing and joking on the training ground, and is a lovely fella."
"I read an interview with him before the final where he said he didn't think the fans had really took to him, and to be honest when I read it I felt sorry for him because he's such a nice lad and to come out and say that about yourself shows the type of honest character he is."
"Vladi was was worried about actually being involved in the final, because he didn't make the squad for the Villa game. But his last kick for Liverpool was the penalty which ultimately won the European Cup, so what a great way to go out!"
Carragher was sorry to see Smicer leave, but says the Czech would be guaranteed a warm welcome should he decide to drop into Melwood for a visit in future.
"If he ever comes back to Melwood he'll be welcomed back with open arms, as he really is one of the nicest fellas we've had at the club."
Biscan's contribution to the Champions League success also drew words of praise from the reds player of the season: "Igor did really well in Europe. After the La Coruna game I spoke to Stevie Gerrard and said "you might not get back in!"
"If Stevie had put in a performnance like that everyone would have been raving about it. Igor put in a fantastic display that night, and made a great run for the goal."
"He also put a great pass through for Garcia against Leverkusen, and he played really well against Juventus in Turin as well."
