That's the crux of the problem with a lot of pundits perhaps more than journo's for me - by definition they tend to be former players and the game changes with each new "generation", for want of a better term.
For example, when Gray was playing, the whole culture of the top division was pretty far removed from the Premiership these days, be it for better or worse. That's not to say the game of football was hugely different, but the current level of squad rotation and so on weren't as much of a factor in his day - clubs were much more inclined to pick their perceived best fit 11 week in week out.
Doesn't make him any less of a clown though, just explains some of the reason for it.
