Fans behavior last night...
I'm a fan from Durban South Africa, I've watched almost every LFC game this year on satellite TV, probably more than you guys in the UK get to see. I always envy the local supporter in Liverpool who get to watch our boys, live, week in and week out. I often wonder if they realize how fortunate they are to be able to experience this and marvel how they are there, at Anfield, week in and week, out even though the cost must be horrendous. They are heroes, every one. True fans of the club?
Last night and for the first time ever, I was ashamed by the actions of my fellow red supporters at Anfield. Robbie Fowler is always our very special player, and he put in a sterling performance. I would always like to see him on the field all the time too. The booing that happened when he was substituted was totally unbecoming of any fan of LFC. Not only was it an insult to the shirt, but an absolute downright slap in the face to the two players affected namely, Morientes and Cisse. This was apparent in the goal celebration of Moro when he scored in front of the Kop and did not even acknowledge them. How can you even think to question Rafa's decisions? Should we not respect and accept what he chooses to do with the team during a match. Has he not earned this? Sure healthy critics is a good thing but that should be done before or after a game, not during one. How is it going to help the players on the field to perform? Sure Moro may be gone next year but he's there now, and wears our shirt now, and for that reason should be supported now. Support during a match should be and always was unconditional. Not last night. Why did the Kop not chant Moro's name when he scored? (If they did, it was damn soft because I did not hear it). I'll tell you, that he certainly did not hear it too. Shame on us.
I'm not saying that Moro, and to a lesser extend Cisse, do not warrant critics for their recent lack of form, but for our own fans to desecrate our sacred ground with such "Manc like" behavior, saddens me tremendously. Questions need to be asked on who is being supported? With the greatest of respect for Robbie and I'm confident he'd agree, the team is not Fowler FC but LFC, and it has always been our credo that no player is more important than the club.Nor is it any players fault if he is selected, substituted or brought on during a match. It is not Robbie's fault and I'm not blaming him, but some of our local fans do not understand or have forgotten simple basics - We support our club and our players.. no matter what. In the past we've had our fair share of players who, quite frankly, were not up to standard, but even then, never has any player or manager not been supported or openly insulted at Anfield in the manner, last night. Anyone who wears that red shirt with the liverbird on their chests will be supported unconditionally by a true fan or red, as I call them.
A person does not choose to become a LFC supporter. They become one at an early age when they see and recognize "something special" about this club and their fans, as witnessed last week in our champs league loss when the kop spontaneously burst into singing "You'll never walk alone" immediately after we conceded. My young son, immediately recognized for himself that this was a special club and a new red was born.(admittedly his old man must have had some influence). Any youngster watching last night would not be able to see that "something special" because my fellow reds in the stands all around Anfield reacted like any other fan of any other club, throwing their toys if thing do not go their way. Before anyone says that it was a minority of supporters who did the booing, on the Telly it sounded quite the opposite, so much so, the Sky commentator even spoke about it. Disgraceful.
And so I appeal to all locally based fans "Come out with a clear statement condemning this behavior so that, that "something special" remains with our club now and for ever.
sorry for the long thread.. but I am really pissed off...
