Gillespie talking to Bristol City

Reds teenager in Robins talks
Saturday, 01 May 2004

by Simon Fudge
Bristol City have announced that they will open contract talks with teenage striker Stephen Gillespie next week.
The 18-year-old is due to be released by Premiership side Liverpool at the season's end and spent two days training with Danny Wilson's side earlier this week after some reserve appearances for the Second Division side in April.

Gillespie has returned to Liverpool, but Ashton Gate chairman Steve Lansdown is hopeful of reaching a deal with the talented youngster.

"We will be getting together with Stephen and his agent to talk personal terms and that is likely to happen next week," Lansdown told the club's official website.

"We understand other clubs are interested. But we have done things right and I think he sees an opportunity to challenge quickly for a first team place.

"I'm hopeful we can reach agreement. If he does sign, supporters should understand that he is one for the future and not expect him to be banging in goals at senior level straight away."
