That was one of the best sporting contests i've ever witnessed. Absolutely epic. And tonight sums up why Britain is no where near this kind of stage in any discipline of competitive sport. Whilst athletes like Rafael Nadal and Roger Federer get on with it, no intrusive media intervention, no over night celebrity status, and progress to the pinnacle of sport, this nation celebrates mediocrity. It basques in runner-upmanship. Any hint of glory, and you are labelled a champion in the making. Any valiant defeat, and you are tagged a bottler.

Whoever won tonight deserved it. They threw themselves on the line. Nadal for the jet like start, Federer for the phoenix like emergence from the ashes. And eventually youth won through. Top class sport at the highest level.

Congratulations Rafa lad. A new king is born.
