The B.C. Coroners Service has determined that remains found in a shoe near Campbell River Wednesday are not human, the organization said Thursday in a press release.

The BCCS, along with a forensic pathologist and an anthropologist, examined the remains and determined that a “skeletonized animal paw was inserted into the shoe with a sock and packed with dried seaweed,” the release said.

The BCCS described the hoax as “reprehensible and very disrespectful to the families of missing persons” and is no longer investigating the incident.
