Re: Is football really so complicated these days?
It's not, and never has been, about having the best players period.
A good team is a synergy. If certain players dont get on, for any reason; either they dislike each other as personalities, or just dont understand each other on the field, then whether or not they are the best becomes irrelevent - they fail to fulfill their potential.
Shankly is a legend because he chose the most APPROPRIATE players, not necesserily the best ones, and he built a team that could play together week in week out. A synergy it was. Paisley was schooled in the same tradition.
The game has changed now, in that every fan wants instant success like they want instant everything else. Morgan's idea was interesting: to buy the club outright and go back in time...that'll never happen now with the new ownership; if we're not careful we'll be a cash cow - qualifying for Europe every season bringing in the dosh but never quite making Prem Champs, and maybe, if we're lucky, picking up a domestic cup. To the yanks, that would be success, because they can bleed the club dry on the passion of fans always expecting greatness around the corner.
in my opinion the best players for LFC, are players who see LFC as their spiritual home - who are fans of the club and it's history as well as being professional foolball players.
For this reason i still believe in the academy concept, to balance out the acquisition of 'stars' on limited contracts, who move on with xtra feathers in their caps, but have no loyalty to either club or paying customer.
