Because he was told to write it perhaps? At the end of the day he's an employed journalist, and employed journalists do what their editors tell them to do.
The only thing that doesn't make any sense is that Liverpool FC wanted it made public at this point. How did LFC benefit from it? It would be obvious O'Neill would be up in arms, and that'll make negotiations 10x worse. LFC may have told Barrett about the bid, but I doubt they wanted it revealed at that point.
