LFC players support charity event

BBC NEWS | England | Merseyside | LFC players support charity event

Stars from Liverpool Football Club will be supporting a campaign to raise £1.5m for a Wirral care home at a special charity dinner and auction.

Hoylake Cottage Hospital is aiming to build a new day centre, which will provide facilities for elderly people.

The event is being hosted by Reds' boss Rafa Benitez and his wife Montse, a member of the fundraising committee.

Team members expected to attend include striker Fernando Torres and defender Jamie Carragher.

The auction will include the tie that Benitez wore in Istanbul when Liverpool won the Champions League in 2005, a pair of boots from both Torres and Gerrard and a pair of Reina's gloves.

Hoylake Cottage says the current building is nearly 100 years old and no longer fit for purpose.

Jen Ling from the hospital said: "It's full of small little rooms and tight corridors and for day care what we want to offer is nice large open spaces.
"We want to have a big garden and offer a bathing service, chiropody, hairdressing, everything that our elderly in the community deserve."

Montse Benitez added: "Sometimes it's really hard for the families, so going to a day care centre like Hoylake Cottage is something that helps people to still take care of their grandparents or parents at home but at the same time to carry on with their lives."
