The problem is and Rafa obviously sees it that way as well is injuries and putting all your eggs in one basket.
A fine example is the situation we are currently in. Go back to the start of the season we are celebrating the signing of Torres and at the start of September he goes and gets a long term injury. We would have been royally fucked this season as it would have been too late to get anyone else in and we wouldnt have had the cash to do anyways.
Hindsight is a wonderful thing but i can fully understand Rafa not been willing to take that risk.

Rafa signed Babel who says he is a striker and Rafa signed Voronin whom he said was topclass and not just a "free" and we had Kuyt a £10m striker... if that happened then he should take responsibility.
I'd say it's more risky buying these journeymen squad players....
