Why did Benitez take so long to work out the importance of pace? And has ANY manager bought so many pedestrian players?

Alonso, Crouch, Pennant, Morientes, Garcia, Kuyt, Josemi, Pellegrino, Aurelio, Zenden, it's fucking astonishing.
