Weekend Round Up (28-29 Aug 2010)

One of the biggest home bankers on the coupon last weekend had to be Spurs against Wigan.  Yet somehow, they managed to lose to Roberto Martinez’s no-hopers.  It wasn’t a fluke either, Wigan could and should have won by more, and but for one of the worst sitters we’ll see anywhere all season by that South American defender they’d have embarrassed Spurs even further. Liverpool v West Brom - Match Preview

When the fixtures were announced, our opening two games were always going to be difficult but we would all have been hoping for more than just the one solitary point from them.  But those fixtures were difficult to call, and there was as much chance we’d end up with six points as none.  Our third fixture however should be yielding nothing other than maximum points, but as Wigan showed at Spurs yesterday you can never be completely sure. Trabzonspor 1 Liverpool 2 - Match Reaction

Good result in the end.  I was worried at half time though, after yet another disappointing opening half had left us ’staring down the barrel’ in the words of the manager.  Thankfully, our second half display was much improved, as it has been in every game except the Man City debacle, and although we left it late we were good value for the win.

One look at the team Roy selected told us this was going to be efficient rather than eye catching.  A 4411 system with Aurelio and Kuyt on the wings, and a central pairing of Lucas and Poulsen told us all we needed to know about what our approach to the game would be.  Don’t give anything away, protect the one goal lead and hopefully nick a goal or two ourselves. Manchester City 3 Liverpool 0 - Match Reaction

Soul destroying. I really felt we had a great chance of going to City and picking up the three points, but that was just dreadful. All over the park, dreadful. We were second best everywhere, and the most galling part is I don’t think City played that well either. We handed them the three points, and some will say we did it before the game even started with the switch to 442. Read the rest of this entry »

Manchester City v Liverpool - Match Preview

Very difficult game to call this one.  Two sides that are relatively evenly matched, despite the huge financial outlay of City, and a repeat of last season’s uneventful, boring contest can’t entirely be ruled out.  A lot will depend on whether one side can grab an early goal, that would open the game up.

City have been largely cautious under Mancini, and have been lining up with three defensive midfield players. As for us, well there was a feeling we were set to revert back to the two holding midfield players due to the absence of Joe Cole, but Javier Mascherano hasn’t travelled and I’m hearing that Hodgson may be set to go with two up front and Gerrard remaining in midfield. Weekend Round Up (21-22 Aug 2010)

For the second week in succession, Chelsea hit six. Admittedly, they were up against sh*te opposition again, but still, you have to hand it to them, they’re a machine at the moment. They look like the team to beat, and a defeat for them by anyone outside the top few clubs looks highly unlikely. Right now I’d settle for someone actually keeping them down to one or two goals, or breaking John Terry’s neck. Either one would be a good result I’d say. The repugnant Chelsea skipper was in full on c*** mode again, yet somehow managed to stay on the field once more. He’s scum, and should be treated as such. It’s about time referees grew some balls and started dealing with him properly. Ditto his wife, and Fabio Capello, and the FA. Why won’t people stand up to the big fodded goon? Weekend Round Up (14-16 Aug 2010)

holloway
The big winners on day one were Blackpool, who trounced Wigan 4-0 at the DW Stadium. What a start for Holloway’s boys. I’d love to see them do well, as Holloway is a character, and his team plays really attractive football. West Brom tried and failed to stay up by sticking to their footballing principles, but it would be good for the game if Blackpool managed to do it.

They’re off to a good start, but they won’t play sides as bad as Wigan every week unfortunately for them. Wigan have some good players, but most of them don’t seem to want to be there anymore. Along with West Brom and either Newcastle or West Ham, they’re my tip to go down. Wigan were so bad that this game was like that one at Burnley last season when City put six past them. This is much worse however, as Blackpool are no Manchester City. Wigan are in deep do do. Read the rest of this entry »

Liverpool v Arsenal - Match Preview

Roy Hodgson is plunged in at the deep end tomorrow as Arsenal come to Anfield for his first Premiership game since becoming Liverpool manager.   No easy bedding in game against a newly promoted side for Roy, it’s a blood and thunder clash against a side who we will hopefully be competing with in the top four once again this season. Number 19 Can Wait - by Sachin Nakrani

Liverpool face Arsenal on Sunday afternoon but it appears their most dangerous opponent this coming season could be over-confidence. A mere three months after the club lay on its knees; ranked the seventh best in England and facing the very real threat of losing its manager and most important players, there are some Kopites speaking genuinely of a title challenge over the course of the next nine months. It would be funny if it wasn’t true.

The renewed optimism is, in fairness, not wholly unfounded. The Mancs aside, there is probably no Premier League club which has enjoyed such a positive summer as us. The manager did indeed leave, but in his place has come an extremely impressive and capable man who will also be able to take charge of Fernando Torres and Steven Gerrard this season. Roy Hodgson has also shown the nous to persuade Joe Cole to join the ranks.  Read the rest of this entry »

Is Poulsen the right man for Liverpool? - by Pete Schulz

poulsenEarlier today Christian Poulsen completed his move to Anfield from Juventus. And even though he is a familiar name, fans are already asking what he’ll bring to the team and whether it’s a good or a bad signing for new manager Roy Hodgson.  So let’s have a look at the arguments on either side.

Is Poulsen the right man for Liverpool?
