Liverpool v Everton - Match Preview

This looks like one of the closest derby games to call in recent times. There’s not much between the sides at the moment, in fact Everton are arguably in better form than we are right now. It promises to be a really tight, tense affair, and the blues will be desperate to gain revenge for the 2-0 defeat they suffered at Goodison in November. Read the rest of this entry »
It’s becoming increasingly difficult not to sound like a broken record. Writing these reports now is more challenging than at any time since I started doing this. No-one wants to read the same things over and over, but when we’re seeing the same things over and over it’s damn near impossible to avoiding repeating yourself. It’s not even about the results, as often when we win we haven’t played much better than when we’ve drawn or lost.
Cruel on the players, they worked hard today and didn’t deserve that late kick in the teeth. That’s not to say we deserved to win, a draw was about right on the balance of play as both teams were shite, but the way this game ended was gut wrenching. The late goal was bad enough, but Dirk’s miss just made it even harder to stomach. The team selection told us everything about Rafa’s intent. Keep it tight and hope to sneak a 1-0. It almost worked too, but whenever you adopt that approach you run the risk of it falling apart as it only takes a mistake or a set piece to undo all the good work.
The biggest challenge we have faced all season. Simple as that. We’re in dire straits, we’ve just been dumped out of a third cup competition - by a struggling lower division side - and we are without our four best attacking players (I’m including Johnson in that even though he’s a full back). We’re in big trouble, and Stoke must be rubbing their hands together in anticipation of this visit. The odds should be against us, although strangely we are still the bookies favourites to win this game apparently.
It seems like ages since we had a game doesn’t it? The Spurs game getting cancelled should ensure that we go with a full strength side tonight as everyone should be rested up and ready to go. We weren’t actually that far off full strength in the first game, but we’re at home this time and you’d like to think that Reading’s chance of knocking us out went when they failed to do it at their place.
In a season packed with dire performances, this may just be the worst yet. We didn’t lose, but we were outplayed for long spells by a team fighting relegation from the Championship. A team without their two best players. This was fucking terrible, especially considering the ’strength’ of the side we put out. Reading wanted it more, they were first to most loose balls and they passed the ball far better than we did. How can that happen? We’re not getting any better are we?
After being kicked in the teeth with late goals so often this season, it made a nice change to be on the other side of the ball for once. Only time will tell just how significant Fernando Torres’ last gasp strike will be, but right now it’s looking pretty monumental in terms of that top four spot, especially if we beat Spurs in our next game. It’s given us a chance and put us within touching distance anyway.
Games against Villa don’t usually have the kind of significance this one has. Usually it’s just about getting three points, and has the same degree of importance as a trip to Stoke or Blackburn. This time it’s different, this game is massive. We need a win, or at the very least a draw. Defeat would be fairly catastrophic, as we can’t afford to lose any more ground in the race for fourth place. Villa are now big threat to our top four status, along with City and Spurs.
SO ANOTHER year in the life of Liverpool supporters draws to an end and like so many of those that have come before, it’s been turbulent. There has been the highs, the lows and the downright confusing, but throughout it all has been us, the famous Kopites, still believing that one day we’ll again reach the summit. So here are my 10 most memorable moments of 2009:
I wish I could say this was a shock, but it really wasn’t. I called it immediately after the Wigan game in midweek, although by the time the weekend came round I’d convinced myself that Torres might just do enough for us to get some sort of result. Not even he could prevent this one though, and we just seem to lurch from one clueless display to another. On MOTD last night they pointed out that last season we dropped 28 points in the whole season. We’ve dropped 27 already so far. Shocking.
